La cita del edificio seleccionado de Zaha Hadid por RIBA:
Zaha Hadid's characteristic shape-making does not always lead to intimate interiors, but here – as we began to see in MAXXI - is a building that is as much about its internal places as its external forms. Stairs sweep, walkways hover, the whole thing is organised as a working piece of sculpture. At present the Chinese tradition of an opera house or theatre being solely a place for witnessing a piece of theatre, and not one for hanging out with cappuccini or cocktails, means that these spaces are only used during performances. A smaller house, clad in dark white instead of grey granite, provides a small black-box performance space and is available for private hire.
Inside and out are linked by artfully placed windows that capture the city. Guangzhou is an avowedly industrial and commercial port. Like many cities that have been through industrial decline, it turned it's back on its river, but it is now remaking the connection, here by means of a grand pedestrian boulevard with a six lane road buried underneath. Where it meets the river, on an artificial mound which accommodates an undercroft, is the Opera House. It contains a public entrance, booking office, cafes, shops (you can buy a grand piano here if you were so inspired). It is s suitably theatrical space and a destination in its own right.
For all the auditorium's asymmetry the acoustics are perfect. It has all the grandiosity and sumptuousness of a Milan or a Royal Opera House: gold painted plasterwork beautifully and effectively treated, and sweeping balconies.
